ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP | ADULT CHILDREN RECOVERY
Many of us think, “I grew up in a good home,” only to realize that having physical needs met does not mean emotional and relational needs were.
This is a group for adults who are struggling with the effects of growing up with a parent, sibling, or another relative within the family who was chronically critical, authoritarian, angry, highly emotional, worried, indifferent, a substance user, codependent, physically or mentally ill or dysfunctional.
You may see that your struggles are similar to those you saw around you growing up, or that what once helped you survive, is no longer working.
Is this group right for you?
The work we do in this group may be helpful if you have worked the 12 steps or have several years in recovery, but find you’re repeating patterns that you’d like to change. You may have relapsed after long-term sobriety or abstinence. Or perhaps you’re experiencing difficulty in your current relationships due to childhood trauma you didn’t realize your were carrying into adulthood.
A few questions to ask yourself…
Do you have a hard time recognizing or acknowledging your accomplishments?
Do you seek approval and affirmation?
Do you respond with anxiety when with authority figures or angry people?
Do you fear criticism?
Do you have a need for perfection?
Do you feel uneasy when life is going smoothly?
Do you continually worry or anticipate problems?
Do you isolate yourself from other people?
Is it hard to trust other people?
Do you take care of others easily but find it difficult to care for yourself?
Do you think spending time or money on yourself is selfish or wasteful?
Have you been in a relationship with someone who has an “addictive personality,” such as heavy drinking and/or drug use, workaholism, eating problem, excessive spending/gambling, etc.?
Do you have problems with compulsive behavior?
Do you have an overdeveloped sense of responsibility?
Is it easier for you to be concerned with others rather than yourself?
Do you feel guilty when you follow through with a boundary?
Do you give in to what others want, even when you decided you wouldn’t?
Are most people you have relationships with telling you their problems?
Do you have difficulty asking for help?
Do you have difficulty identifying feelings? Feeling? Talking about feelings?
Do you have difficulty identifying your needs and/or wants?
Do you judge yourself daily?
Do you have feelings of guilt, inadequacy or low self-esteem?
Are you afraid of being alone or abandoned?
Do you find yourself accepting unacceptable behavior?
Do you find yourself reacting to life rather than deciding how you want to respond?
If you felt yourself answering ‘yes’ to many of the questions above, this group can help you see yourself, your childhood, and your relationships in a new light. The purpose of our time together is to develop empowered awareness and the emotional skills to approach life’s challenges without childhood trauma holding us back any longer.
